אָבִֽינוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ | ’Àˈvịnụ, Mạḷˈkénụ | Our Father, Our Sovereign is a ה | təfịˈḷàh | prayer sung during the יָמִים נוֹרָאִים | Yàˈmịm Nọṛàˈ’ịm | Days of Awe.
The lyrics of the prayer are from the traditional מַחזוֹר | mạħˈzọṛ | cycle of prayer books for major Jewish festivals.
The melody is in the Jewish scale.
In this SATB arrangement by David ben Or, the traditional melody alternates between the tenor in the A sections, and the alto in the B section. In the A sections, the bass accompanies the tenor in contrary motion, and when the alto answers the main melody imitatively one measure later, the soprano likewise accompanies the alto in contrary motion. On the other hand, in the B section, the soprano accompanies the alto in parallel thirds, and when the bass answers the main melody contrarily one measure later, the tenor likewise accompanies the bass in parallel thirds.
Throughout the song, the feminine voices counter the patriarchal and feudal traditional lyrics of the masculine voices with matriarchal and spiritual lyrics, in the feminine voice.
