Farewell to Rabbi Sylvia

Farewell to Rabbi Sylvia is a trio for clarinet or violin, violoncello, and piano, in klezmer style, but through-composed, with separate melodic lines for the clarinet or violin, the 'cello, and each hand of the piano.

This piece, in 12:8 rhythm in the key of G minor, was composed by David ben Or in honor of Rabbi Sylvia Rothschild for the occasion of her departure from Wimbledon & District synagogue, where it was performed on 19 July 2014 by Miranda Fulleylove on violin, Adrian Bradury on violoncello, and Robin Green on piano.

It is in part a character sketch of an intellectual rabbi, who during a speech on a complex topic often backtracks to approach the topic along other paths, embellished with different details, until she finally ties everything together — all the while standing on her toes.

The piece is in the form of a four-part fugue on a single tortuous eight-bar melody that tiptoes resolutely up and down, ending inconclusively on the supertonic. The theme is first introduced in full by the violin or clarinet. It is then restated by the left hand on the piano, joined, in turn, by the right hand on the piano, the violin or clarinet, and the violoncello, each entering two measures later at the same pitch, but each adding its own lively flourishes and embellishments. There follows a playful stretto section on the first two measures of the theme, in which the music modulates rapidly through the keys of D minor, B♭ minor, and G minor. The four voices then recommence in C minor, striving together in unison for one whole measure, but then immediatly diverging, as the 'cello and each hand of the piano go their own way with sporadic restarts. At the next go, each voice plays in a different key, with the left hand at the piano starting off in F minor, the 'cello starting a measure later in C minor, and the violin or clarinet switching to G minor after another measure, while the right hand at the piano modulates through all three of those keys, until they all find their way back to the original key of G minor. They conclude much as they began, entering two measures apart, led this time by the right hand at the piano, followed by the 'cello, then the violin or clarinet, and finishing with the left hand at the piano.

The musicians should play with a relaxed and loose rhythm so that the voices can be easily distinguished, and should improvise embellishments for the sake of spontaneity.
